Normally wrestling matches weren’t usually his thing, it did remind him of this fiction he read some time ago about a place that was literally split between an Underground and a Surface, where two different Gyms existed and both of them were complements as well as deterrents of each other.[break][break]

The place Underground was more known for their Fight Clubs, while the Surface was more celebrated for their advocating flight in all its whims and manners.[break][break]

…wait, did this place really exist? And if it did, boy, Alexei would really want to visit it and see for himself![break][break]

…but that was neither here nor there, this was the here and now, and he was being herded into the changing room by some overenthusiastic staff members who wanted him to suit up and get ready for a wrestling match![break][break]

“Wait! No, you don’t understand I’m not the Fighting-type—“ he tried to shout as he was practically shoved into a dressing room and instructed to pick out something to wear when he went outside. And then he heard something about a wrestling moniker, and holy shit—this was bad.[break][break]

Really, really bad![break][break]

“Oh, hell no…what did I get myself into…” he groaned, quickly diving into the dressing racks and looking feverishly for something that wouldn’t be too revealing as he heard the muffled cheering coming from outside.[break][break]

The original plan of the day was to have his Riolu, Vincent, do the wrestling—but there must’ve been some miscommunication as even HE, the Fortree Gym Leader, was called down to the ring and practically herded backstage to get changed![break][break]

Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit, SHIT! He thought as he found something that wasn’t too stupid-looking and quickly ran for one of the closed areas to change out of his clothing. While the costume looked more like a Hawlucha’s body, he was surprised to see that it came along complete with a feathery mask that complemented the entire thing.[break][break]

Shit, shit, shit, shit! I can’t allow myself to get too injured otherwise this is going to— he continued as he quickly pulled on the mask just in time for the overly enthusiastic backstage staffers to come find him and drag him down and back out into the ring, where his Riolu was waiting in the blue corner.[break][break]

Boy, he was in for one hell of a time…

"LADIES AND GENTLEMAN, THANK YOU FOR BEING SO PATIENT AFTER THIS LAST HEATED MATCH! WHO THOUGHT THAT A HUMAN COULD OVERTHROW A SAWKS SO EASILY?" The crowd started cheering as the announcer stood in the middle of the ring, with his black and white tuxedo. The man waited for the silence to fall before resuming his speech. "BUT I'M SURE EVERYONE WANTS TO SEE SOMETHING MORE HEATED, RIGHT? THIS TIME, OUR 3-TIMES WINNER FOR THE NIGHT IS GOING TO FIGHT... A FELLOW HUMAN AND HIS POKEMON!"[break][break]

As the crowd kept cheering and the announcer kept his speech going, a figure clad in black appeared from the red corner, followed by a Combusken. A full mask covered his face, onlly allowing his dark mane to flow out at the back of his head. As the man walked towards the ring, the announcer noticed him and nodded. Time to keep the show going. "Without further ado, I think it's time I presented you all the fighters for this last match! In the red corner, your favorite for the night, the unexpected black horse... THE ALOLAN AVENGER!!"[break][break]

While the crowd went haywire, the man in black got on stage and waved at everyone in the room, making them go louder. Under his mask, the alolan avenger sighed. How did he get roped into all of this? Simply. Balder was walking with Hawks, his Combusken, before getting intercepted by the owner of this fighting rig and getting asked if Hawks could participate. While this could've been good practice for the fighting bird, Balder decided to be the one stepping in the ring instead. At first, the owner wasn't sure, but then he quickly accepted, leading to this chain of event.[break][break]

The voice of the announcer brought the fighter out of his thoughts as he was announcing the challenger. "And to the blue corner! Assisted by his faithful Riolu, he comes from a remote location. It's said that he's been honing his skills repeatedly against pokemons and humans to try and reach the peak of his skills! Give an applaud to the challenger: Treetop Chicken!" ... Wait, what's with that backstory? Did the guy just rope a random passerby into the ring to try and get some views? Poor boy...

Meanwhile, Alexei was panicking.[break][break]

Panicking to all fuck—wait a second, what?![break][break]

“Hey!” he cries out, more than a bit pissed at the commentator the moment he heard his intro. “I specifically said I was the Unovan Luchador—“ he growls, before his Riolu looks at him, worry written all over his face.[break][break]

Out of all his Pokémon, his Riolu is one of the few who knows what could possibly happen to his human companion should he get a bruise—even a single scratch could ruin him for days.[break][break]

“Vince, I know… what a righteous mess we got ourselves into,” he says with a sigh, patting the little one on his head. While the Riolu yipped and turned to face the Combusken, he lets out another sigh.[break][break]

“Well, time to make a fool out of myself… oh, crap, he’s even bigger than I expected…” he groans from behind the Hawlucha mask, shaking his head a bit and letting the feathers flare out.[break][break]

“Vince, be careful! Don’t attack unless he—she—the other Pokémon attacks you first!” he says a few moments later, looking up and bracing himself.[break][break]

How the fuck was he going to get out of this then—how could he explain?![break][break]

Oh, bloody hell.

The announcer, hearing the challenger in the Blue Corner about the name he was given, lowered the mic so the public doesn't hear him "Look kid, ee already got a star fighter using his home region as part of his monicker. Can't have a second one, there would be a lack of originallity. And you decided to wear the hawlucha outfit so... Treetop Chicken will remain." "George, that's not how you'll be liked by other individuals."[break][break]

That last line came from Balder, as he had approached the announcer and the other fighter. He looked at the humanoid Hawlucha. "Sorry you had to suffer his bad naming sense. I'll pay you a drink after this fight, alright?" Balder returned to his corner, waiting for the signal, George the announcer moved out of the ring before doing another announcement. "IS EVERYONE READY?! THE ALOLAN AVENGER JUST ANNOUNCED HIS VICTORY TO THE CHICKEN! NOW, HOW WILL THE CHALLENGER REACT? TIME TO BEGIN THIS FINAL FIGHT!"[break][break]

Balder sighed. If anything, George had talent in setting up a scene, but that was useless. "Burst, stand back for now. I'll go one on one against the man. When you see the signal, then you can jump in." The combusken screeched as the buzzer signaling the start of the fight rang through the stadium. Balder lunged forward, ready to grapple with Alexei.

“Terrible naming sense,” was all he could say with a shake of his head.[break][break]

What, they didn’t have a Noivern costume or a Braviary, so he had to go with the Hawlucha![break][break]

“That better be vodka, if you’re paying,” he says to the other—more than a little scared at this point but what the hell, he’s not going to let his nerves show as they climb into the ring.[break][break]

He has to be extra careful now, but that’s the least of his worries because there’s a literal wall of muscle coming right at him and he has a few seconds to react![break][break]

“Whoa!” he exclaims, biting down hard on his lip as he attempted to bend over backwards, hoping that the other would overshoot and grab at thin air. Okay, so maybe those lessons he had years ago in flexibility would come in handy. But shit, how long ago was that, now?![break][break]

Far too long![break][break]

“Vince! Stand your ground and wait!” he shouts over to the worried-looking Riolu, who nods and holds his paws up, trembling in his feet as he eyes the Combusken on the other side of the field. The Fighting-type knows that he has to be on the lookout for his companion, as well—[break][break]

Once he’d somehow managed to almost flatten himself on the canvas, he then tries to spring upward and catch the other man in a shoulder bash![break][break]

This is going to hurt like fuck afterward, if Les were here he’d certainly roll his eyes and tell me to go ahead and bury myself… knowing him? Hah! He thinks in a panic, hoping that his move would catch the much-bulkier opponent by surprise.

The lunge was a miss, surprisingly. It seemed like the opponent knew his way in a fight somehow. Maybe it wouldn't be as boring as he thought it could be. As Balder's arm flew over the other trainer, the crowd suddenly turned silent and some people began to chant Treetop Chicken's name. Guess it's time to go along the flow heh?[break][break]

The other masked contestant rose up, aiming to shoulder bash Balder before he pulls away. Under his mask, the Alolan Giant smirked. With a move like that, normally he would block it, or simply tank it and barely feel anything. But this was a show, a means to entertain the crowd. And after getting such a bad stage name, the guy deserved a bit of fame.[break][break]

As Alexei's shoulder lander around Balder's solar plexus, the man arched his body, as if the hit had been stronger then planned. Then, he began to stumble backwards, hands covering the area of impact, before dropping one knee on the ground. While some people gasped at the sight, it seemed like most of the crowd went wild from this sudden turn of events, cheering the challenger on. Amidst the crowd's cheer, Balder tried to say something to the other guy, hoping to not be heard.[break][break]

"Try going for my stomach next. We need to entertain the crowd a bit more." The man started standing up, albeit feigning some difficulty. It was as if the hit had really dealt lots of damage, as he was forcing his legs to shake slightly. He then took a defensive stance, similar to that of a Soutpaw Boxer covering his sides with his back hunched a bit. He was ready for more.

The young Riolu could only watch in silent horror as his human companion began to get… wait a second, what was he seeing?[break][break]

The jackal Pokémon blinked and watched, open-mouthed as his Hawlucha-disguised human companion had bent over so far, almost landing flat on his back before attempting to throw the other human off-balance.[break][break]

He knew that Alexei was somewhat on the scrawny side when it came to his physical build, but apparently, desperation made people do certain things—like this. The sounds around him suddenly changed from hushed quietness to what the Riolu guessed was loud cheering for his human companion, and all he could do was watch in shocked silence…[break][break]

Meanwhile, over where the Hawlucha-guised Gym Leader was…[break][break]

While he’d missed what the other said, he knew he had to ‘ham it up’, as his ex-boyfriend would say. He could never really understand why the other was leaving himself open but he knew he had to carry the show now! He’d blocked out the noise as much as possible, and propped himself up, regaining his balance for a few moments.[break][break]

Without thinking, he braces his arm and aims to trip the other by attempting to grab him by the neck with his right arm—but then this leaves his left hand free for a surprise sucker punch to the other man’s gut![break][break]

It seems like the challenger was getting more confident in his skills and capabilities. He was also getting pumped up, as he rushed head first into the fray. Balder did say they needed to make the crowd more excited, but the way this fighter was advancing... He was full of openings. It showed that he didn't possess lots of battle experience against other humans.[break][break]

The Treetop Chicken went and grabbed Balder by the neck, wrapping his right arm around it. The Totem Gym leader brough his arms up to cover his face, as a precaution. Yet, he knew what was coming: a "sucker punch". Obviously, not the pokemon move, but an actual punch that was supposed to catch someone off-guard and deal massive damage. Sadly, as Balder expected to be hit in the stomahc, he had braced for impact. His muscles were tightened to the maximum, serving as a hard defense to the punch of the challenger.[break][break]

After receiving the hit, Balder took a deep breath. It was time for the Alolan Avenger to fight back. "Sorry. Time to end this." A simple whisper, yet loud enough for the challenger to hear it. The Alolan Avenger took a step forward, hopefully freeing himself from the hold as well. If not... then the Treetop Chicken would simply feel the pain a bit more.[break][break]

Rapidly, Balder placed a strong hand on the challenger's right arm, to hold him in place. With his free hand, he then proceeded to attempt a punch to Alexei's liver. Be it a hit or a miss, the Alolan Avenger, would then rotate on himself, still holding the challenger's arm, before suddenly stopping the rotation as he kneeled on the ground and used all his strenght to have the man go over his shoulder and slam upon the ring. Would this mean the end of the match?[break][break]

Could anyone blame him for not knowing how to fight against other people? Certainly not. Alexei tended to keep to himself most of the time, avoiding getting into trouble as much as possible.[break][break]

However, times change—and people change as well. He didn’t know that his obvious greenhorn ways would get him into a lot of trouble—especially in something this dangerous.[break][break]

“Wh—whoa!” he yelped, taking a step backward as the other stepped forward. Shit, he was trapped. He couldn’t hear the loud, distressed yipping coming from the Riolu, forced to watch everything happening because the other Pokémon hadn’t even moved—clearly distressed.[break][break]

The Riolu tried to convey to the other Pokémon that his human companion would be in so much trouble if so much as a single bump or a scratch would be inflicted on him, but in the heat of the moment, the Riolu couldn’t move. He was stuck in position, because he’d been told by Alexei not to move unless the other Pokémon attacked him. Ugh![break][break]

Another loud yelp escaped him as his right arm was grabbed, and he felt the air get knocked out of him before being hefted up and over—holy crap, just how strong was this guy anyway?![break][break]

The only thing he could do was brace himself for impact as he felt his body smack hard into the canvas. Oh, Arceus, the pain was terrible.[break][break]

What he was more worried about was the bruising that would follow after. Yikes.[break][break]

At this the Riolu leapt forward, breaking contact and running over to where his human companion had fallen. While he couldn’t get angry, there was a disappointed yapping noise coming from the small Fighting-type as he tried to plant himself in front of Alexei, paws held high.[break][break]

“Ow, Vince, I’m—fine,” he says with a wince, before trying to stand up—and then abruptly not because holy crap that landing winded him a little too much. His head was spinning from the impact on the canvas. “M-maybe not, I lied,” he continued as he tried to catch his breath.[break][break]

This was guaranteed going to earn him a trip to the emergency room later—if he could get up. He could hear the counting, but it was too much noise at this point as he fought to stay awake.[break][break]

Oof.

The match was over. Balder might've actually overdone it, by using the opponent's weight against himself to slam him into the ground. If anything, it clearly showed that the "Treetop chicken" was not used to fighting. And the way the Riolu was worried about his trainer proved that point even more. Balder looked behind him, towards his Combusken. "Burst, go get the painkillers in my bag. The guy's gonna need them."[break][break]

The chicken nodded before running off towards the changing rooms where the bag was left. While the pokemon was going to search the meds, the Alolan Avenger approached the fallen warrior who almost tried to look though for his pokemon. The countdown was over and the announcer was declaring Balder the winner, but the man did not care right now. He placed one knee on the ground beside the challenger.[break][break]

"I should've held back a bit more, I didn't think you'd take the hit so badly. For now, don't move. I've sent my Combusken to get some painkillers so we can get you out of here. I'll pay you a bottle of vodka another time since meds and alcohol are not a good mix." As he said those words, Burst returned and jumped upon the stage, giving the painkillers to Balder. The Gym Trainer then proceeded to give them to the Riolu. [break][break]

"Make sure he takes two of them now, and two more before he sleeps. It's gonna help a bit. And you, Treetop Chicken, put some ointments around your lower back, that's where you might get some marks from that throw. Your buttocks as well possibly. And when you feel better, come see me in Sootopolis, at the gym. I'll buy your Vodka bottle at that moment."
